Of course Dr. Flowers does not understand the fact that wicked sinner does not seek God but hates God. Let us look at John 3:20 which emphatically says that there is none who seeks can or comes to God because they love and take pleasure in the darkness of their sin AND WILL NOT COME TO THE LIGHT OF CHRIST lest their deeds be exposed.
John 3:20 – For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Then Dr. Flowers gives the Reformed understanding and the Non-Calvinist Traditionalist understandings of the subject he is talking about.
Then he gives an illustration that falls to the ground powerless, it is no way helps his argument here. Let us take a look at it.
The contrast between these two perspectives can be illustrated by this simple question: Does proof that I am incapable of calling the president on the telephone also prove that I am incapable of answering the telephone if the president were to call me? Of course not, yet that is essentially the principle a Calvinist is assuming in their theological approach to this text.
Spiritually speaking, no one who is wicked sinner would ever respond to God for they hate the Light of Christ and Love the Darkness of their Sin John 3:20
Luke 16:31 drives home the deadness of man in sin and the exceeding sinfulness of sin apart from Christ setting one free from it’s bondage.
Luke 16:31 -Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'”
The Holy Scriptures tell us plainly that even if one RISES FROM THE DEAD (OR GETS KNOCKED OFF A HORSE, ONE OF DR FLOWERS FAVORITES) THEY WILL NOT BE PERSUADED OR CONVINCED TO BELIEVE OR BEGIN TO SEEK GOD.
Then Dr. Flowers begins to state the error and false teaching and understanding of “no one seeks God”. He says below and I quote:
Calvinists read this text to mean that our lack of initiative somehow proves our inability to respond positively to His initiative. They presume that God’s work in sending His Son, the Holy Spirit, and the inspired gospel, calling for all to be reconciled through faith in Christ, is insufficient to enable the lost to respond in faith. But the text simply never says this.
No Calvinist believe that the wicked sinner is completely dead in sin and his every desire is dominated by sin. Even what would be called good works before man, meaning a good mother, father son or daughter is filthy rags before God, because it is sin from defect, lacking the right spiritual motive.
1 Corinthians 10:31 -So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Even though one is a wicked sinner and is a good father, mother, son, or daughter is due to the fact that they were created in the image of God which is now tainted with sin and filthy rags before a Holy and righteous God, Like I sin, it is sin from defect, lacking the right spiritual motive, that is being a godly father, a godly mother son or daughter to the glory of God.
The gospel in and of itself is insufficient to enable the lost to respond in faith in and of itself. Dr. Flowers neglects the inner working of the Holy Spirit. He does speak of Spirit filled Gospel preachers and I to believe that those who preach the gospel are enabled by the Holy Spirit. But let’s see what the Scripture says about the Spirit and His work in saving a wicked sinner in bondage to sin who loved the darkness of his sin and will not come to the light of Christ John 3:20.
John 6:63 -It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
Jesus makes it clear and emphatically says IT IS THE SPIRIT WHO GIVES LIFE, then along with the works he speaks are spirit and life.
John 3:5 – Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus once again speaks of the absolute necessity of the Spirit of God in Salvation and entering the Kingdom of Heaven. In John 3:5 Jesus says, UNLESS ONE IS BORN OF WATER AND SPIRIT, HE CANNOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
How Dr FLowers overlooks these verses astounds me. But tradition blinds us all to the truth. John 3:5 even speaks of the INABILITY OF THE SINNER ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD UNLESS HE IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT.
Ephesians 6:17 -and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
This verse shows how intimately connected the Spirit and word of God are. The word of God is the sword of the Spirit.
1 Peter 1:2 -chosen by the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
In salvation the believing sinner is sanctified or set apart by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ, This is Salvific language which is undeniable and cannot be refuted.
2 Corinthians 3:18 -And we all having been unveiled in face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit
This verse says that all Christians looking into a mirror, reflective and figurative of the “word of God” we are being changed from one degree of glory by the Spirit of the LOrd. YOU JUST CANNOT SEPARATE THE GLORIOUS MINISTRY IN THE WORK OF SALVATION WHO CAUSES THE SINNER TO BE BORN AGAIN THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTALITY OF THE PREACHED WORD.
Dr. Flowers next assertion is shocking in what he accuses the Reformed believers of doing. I quote him below.
In Romans chapter 3:10-20 the apostle is seeking to prove that no one can attain righteousness by means of the law. But in verse 21 he shifts to reveal a righteousness that can be obtained by means of grace through faith in Christ.
The Reformed believer has no problem with what Dr. Flowers asserts above, but down below is another story, he definity misrepresents the Reformed Faith.
Calvinists seem to think that because mankind is unable to attain righteousness by means of the law that they must equally be unable to obtain righteousness by means of grace through faith in Christ. This, however, is never established anywhere in the pages of Scripture.
Dr Flowers asserts without any proof (just a mere accusation) that Calvinists believe that the sinner is unable to obtain righteousness by means of grace through faith in Christ. This is so not true and is exactly what the Reformed Faith believes and we no it is never established anywhere in the pages of Scripture. Flowers, please provide provide examples or proof of this empty assertion.
Next Dr Flowers asserts:
“Calvinists wrongly assume that because mankind is unable to fully keep the demands of the law that they are equally unable to admit their inability to keep those demands and trust in the One who has. Again, this is simply never established in the Bible.”
Let me first remind everyone that the sinner in bondage to sin, Satan and the sinful polluted system of this world cannot keep the demands or commandments of God’s law. Calvinist do assert that mankind is unable to fully keep the demands of the law that being saved or unsaved. As far as the wicked sinner admitting his inability to keep those demands and commandments of the law I would say that is probably true unless the Spirit is convicting him and drawing him to Christ. I return again to John 3:20, Light has come into the world, but men hate the light and will not come to the light lest their deeds be exposed, they love the darkness of their sin. They do not care apart from the work of the Spirit and the Word admitting their inability because they are voluntary slaves who take great pleasure in their sin and wickedness.
Romans 8:7 -For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
This verse definity speaks of the INABILITY OF THE SINNER IN DOING ANYTHING SPIRITUAL APART FROM WORKING OF THE SPIRIT AND THE WORD TO SUBMIT T TO THE LAW OF GOD. It actually says that the wicked man is in a state of hostility and hatred toward God and not only does it not submit to God, INDEED IT CANNOT. Once again God’s word clearly and plainly speaking the inability of the sinner to keep the demands or commandments of God’s holy law.
Romans 8:8 -Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
We cannot forget verse 8 that only strengthens what Paul strongly asserts by the Spirit in verse 7, that being those in the flesh, still unsaved being wicked sinners cannot do anything to please God. INABILITY OF THE SINNER IS ALL THROUGH THE BIBLE ONLY ONE WEARING GLASSES OF TRADITIONALISM WILL BE BLINDED TO THE TRUTH OF WHAT GOD’S HOLY WORK CLEARLY SAYS.
The Reformed Believer asserts that the sinner cannot keep the Holy Commandments of the God’s law or trust in Christ until the work of the Spirit and the Word of God commences. Dr Flowers has misunderstood the Reformed Faith and thus Misrepresented it.
Dr Flowers says mistakenly below:
Proof that mankind is morally incapable of earning their own righteousness by doing good works is not proof that mankind is morally incapable of believing and trusting in the righteousness of another.
Dr. Flowers I can keep going back to John 3:20 that mankind hates the light of Christ and loves the darkness of sin and will not come to the light lest their deeds be exposed, so yes mankind is morally incapable of believing and trusting in the
John 15:5 – I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
We read here that even the Christian, unless he is abiding in the vine, who is figuratively Christ can do nothing, Jesus says apart from me you can do NOTHING.NOTHING DOES NOT MEAN A LITTLE SOMETHING. NOTHING MEANS NOTHING AT ALL PLEASING TO GOD. SO IF THE CHRISTIAN CAN DO NOTHING PLEASING TO GOD APART FROM CHRIST, WHAT CAN THE WICKED SINNER DO OTHER THAN LOVE THE DARKNESS OF HIS SIN THAT HE TAKES GREAT PLEASURE IN,
Dr. Flowers sounds Pelagian in the last quote…….hmmmmmmm
Dr. Flowers asserts and I quote:
It is the Calvinist’s burden to prove that fallen man is born morally incapable of responding in faith to God’s inspired and powerful appeal to be reconciled from that fall. They have to demonstrate how our fallen condition prevents us from responding willingly.”
Really, I don’t think so. The Reformed Faith has proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt. I could prove it again and probably will in the near future but I challenge Flowers to prove that fallen wicked sinner who hates the light of Christ and will not come to the light and love and takes great pleasure in his sins of darkness can at anytime they want respond willingly to the gospel
“Additionally, Calvinists need to explain why a just God would seal mankind in a fallen/disabled condition from birth and still hold them responsible for their rejection of God’s appeals, even though they have no control over their naturally disabled condition and subsequent “choices” to reject God’s genuine offer of forgiveness.”
Don’t know why Flowers likes the word “disabled” so much I will stick with Total and Radical Depravity and Total inability which I have already shown through this rebuttal. Romans 5 plainly shows that Adam represented all of mankind and that when he fell into sin, death spread to all sin, Spiritual death, not just physical death. If one is spiritually dead they all they can do is that which spiritual death produces and that is wickedness and sin.
Romans 5:18 -Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men
This devastating to Flowers position, It was through Adam’s one transgression that CONDEMNATION CAME UPON ALL MEN. THAT CONDEMNATION BEING THE WRATH OF GOD, LAKE OF FIRE ETC,
Romans 5:19 -For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Another devastating blow to Flowers position, and really debunks the age of accountability, Romans 5:19 says by one man’s disobedience, that being Adam the many were made SINNERS CONNECTING BACK TO SPIRITUAL DEATH SPREADING TO ALL MEN,
So Dr Flowers there are scriptures that say “no one seeks God and then there scripture that encourages man to seek God. How do you harmonize them. My answer is below.
Dr Flowers says something about the wicked sinner seeking God that amazes me and makes me think he will go to any length to prove non-calvinism. I quote,
“Needless to say, the Bible certainly treats fallen men as if they are genuinely responsible (response-able) to His appeals and offers of grace and forgiveness. On what basis do Calvinists rest their presumption that, as a consequence of the sin of another, God has decreed that mankind would be born with “Total Inability” to respond willingly to the gospel?”
What Flowers says above is in direct contradiction to God’s Holy Word.
Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Notice the conditions for those who seek God, they must have faith without which they will not please God, those in the flesh in Romans 8:7 can do nothing to please God and they must believe that he exist and rewarder of those who seek him. The natural man, the wicked sinner does not have this disposition within him. The scriptures tell us that not all men have faith and that none seek God.
2 Thessalonians 3:2 -and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith.
Without faith you cannot please God or seek God, you will just be “feeling and groping in the darkness” which one of the verses Flowers uses to prove his position Acts 17:27
I have never seen a natural man, wicked sinner begin to seek God until God began to deal with him through the word of God and His Holy Spirit.
The other scriptures calling for the wicked men to seek God we remember this is a Holy command from God’s Holy Law and we remember that:
Romans 8:7 – The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
Wicked sinners cannot keep God’s Holy command from His holy law to seek him. Those in the flesh can do nothing to please God. John 3:20 again says light of CHrist has come into the world and men have hated the light, hostile to it Romans 8 says, so I do not think they will be seeking Christ apart from divine intervention. They will do what wicked sinners do, voluntary sinners, they indulge in the pleasure and love of their sin, that is what they will seek tenaciously daily and always.
They commandments to them to seek the Lord is not what the can or are able to do BUT WHAT THEY OUGHT TO DO, BUT DO TO THEIR SINFUL EVIL NATURE THAT LOVES SIN THEY NEVER WILL APART FROM THE WORD OF GOD AND THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD.
Dr Flowers needs to return to the drawing board, His study of God’s word is just too superficial and typical of the non-calvinist.
